Courtenay Bay Breakwater Light, Saint John, New Brunswick



This light, formerly a gun battery from WWII is situated at the end of a long breakwater at the Southeast entrance to Saint John harbour, Saint John, New Brunswick. The start of the breakwater is on the property of the Irving Oil refinery and is not accessible to the public. The light was established at this point in 1927. Distant photos taken in March 2012.

Partridge Island Lighthouse, Saint John, New Brunswick



Situated at the Southwest entrance to the Saint John Harbour, there has been a lighthouse on Partridge Island since 1791, the oldest light station in New Brunswick. The current light is from 1961. Although the island is connected to the mainland by a rock breakwater, the end of the breakwater is fenced and the island is not open to the public. This island is also the site of what was believed to be the first steam powered fog signal in the world (1859). These distant photos were taken in March 2012.

Wilmot Bluff Lighthouse, Oromocto, New Brunswick





Located on the Southwest shore of the Saint John River near Oromocto Island, the Wilmot Bluff Lighthouse was first established in 1869 along with several of the other river lights. The current tower is from 1908 and was decomissioned in 1967. The light is on private property which is owned and maintained by the decendents of the last lightkeeper. The light sits on a high bluff which is some distance back from the river's edge. The light is not far from the Fredericton Airport. Photographs taken in March 2012.

Market Square Lighthouse (Faux), Saint John, New Brunswick


This replica (faux) lighthouse sits outside the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre and the Hilton Hotel in downtown Saint John, New Brunswick. It is directly across from the Saint John Lighthouse and just down from the relocated Digby Wharf Lighthouse. Photo was taken in March 2012.

Gagetown Lighthouse, Gagetown, New Brunswick




Gagetown Lighthouse is situated on the West shore of the Saint John River just south of the town of Gagetown, New Brunswick. It is adjacent to the Gagetown - Lower Jemsig Ferry dock. The site was established in 1895 and the current light was built in the 1930's. The area is subject to flooding and this light has been damaged on several occassions. Photos taken in March 2012.

Hampstead Wharf Lighthouse, Hampstead, New Brunswick




Hampstead Wharf Lighthouse is located at the Hampstead Wharf on the West shore of the Saint John River at Hampstead, New Brunswick. The wharf was constructed as a stopping place for steamboats that sailed on the river. The light was established in 1900 and the current tower was built in 1913. The light has been inactive for some years. Since 2000 the St. John River Society has maintained the lighthouse and it was restored in 2010. I formerly sat closer to the water's edge, but was moved back to prevent damage from the spring flooding. Photos were taken in March 2012.

St. Stephen Lighthouse (Faux), St. Stephen, New Brunswick









Located on the wharf at the foot of King Street in St. Stephen, New Brunswick is this pretty faux lighthouse. While never a real light, I felt it was worthwhile including it here on my blog. The wharf is situated on the St. Croix River directly across from Calais, Maine. Photos taken in March 2012.

McColgan Point Lighthouse, Summerville, New Brunswick



McColgan Point Lighthouse is located in the Summerville area of the Kingston Penninsula in New Brunswick. It was named after its first lightkeeper Samuel McColgan and sits on the North side of the Kennbecasis River on a rocky point between the Kennbecasis Island Ferry slip and the Saint John - Summerville Ferry slip. The light was established in 1913. The light is accessible but due to icy conditions, I could only obtain photos from the Kennbecasis Island Ferry slip. Photos taken in March 2012.

The Cedars Lighthouse, Long Reach, New Brunswick




Located on the East side of the Saint John River in the Long Reach area of the Kingston Penninsula, this light originally established in 1904 was decommissioned in 1994. It is now owned and maintained by the Penninsula Heritage Society. Photos were taken in March 2012.

Sand Point Lighthouse, Kingston Penninsula, New Brunswick




Elevated Sand Point Lighthouse, the tallest of the Saint John River lights, is located on the East side of the Saint John River on the Kingston Penninsula and just South of Harding Point where the ferry crosses the river from the community of Grand Bay/Westfield. The site was established in 1869 and the current light is from 1898 but has been refurbished several times. The tower is elevated to prevent damage from the spring flooding that affects many of the other Saint John River lights. Photos taken in March 2012.

Oak Point Lighthouse, Greenwich, New Brunswick



Stately Oak Point Lighthouse is located on the West side of the Saint John River near Greenwich, New Brunswick in Oak Point Park (park operated by the Kiwanas Club). The site was established in 1869 and the current active light is from 1902. Photos taken in March 2012.

Belyeas Point Lighthouse, Morrisdale, New Brunswick





Belyeas Point Lighthouse is located on the West side of the Saint John River just South of Morrisdale, New Brunswick. Named after its first lightkeeper, Spafford Barker Belyea, the site was established in 1882 and the current lighthouse dates back to the 1930's. The light is still active. The photos were taken in March 2012.

Dofflemeyer Point Lighthouse, Olympia, Washington



The Dofflemeyer Point Lighthouse is located in the Boston Harbour area of Olympia, Washington, near the Boston Harbour Marina on Puget Sound. The station was established at this location in 1887 and the current light is from 1934. The light marks the Eastern entrance to Budd Inlet and the Port of Olympia. Photos taken in November 2011.

Cala Figuera Lighthouse, Mallorca, Spain




This lighthouse which was built in 1860 is located on a rocky point at the West end of the Bay of Palma (Badia de Palma) marking its entrance. The light was renovated and raised in approximately 1960. These early morning distant photos were taken in September 2011.

This newer light is located at the end of the outer breakwater in the harbour at Palma (Palma de Mallorca), Mallorca, Spain. I have no information as to the date of the light. Photos taken in September 2011.

Far de Porto Pi, Mallorca, Spain



The Porto Pi Lighthouse (Far de Porto Pi) is located in the main harbour area of Palma de Mallorca on the island of Mallorca, Spain. This beautiful lighthouse was built in 1617 and appears to be in excellent condition. Photos taken in September 2011.

Sidi Bou Said Lighthouse, Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia



The Sidi Bou Said (Ra's Qatarjamah) Lighthouse is located in the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said, North of the city of Tunis in Tunisia. This light, which was constructed in 1840 is believed to be the oldest in Tunisia.  It sits high on a hill (Jebel el-Manar or Fire Mountain) at the top of the village. Several sources indicate the name of the hill is derived from when fires were lit at the site to guide sailors in the Punic and Roman times. The location is Cape Carthage and is the entrance to the Bay of Carthage. The ruins of the old city of Carthage are only a short distance South of Sidi Bou Said. The light remains active.  Photos taken in September 2011. 

La Goulette Lighthouse, La Goulette, Tunisia



The La Goulette Lighthouse (Tunis Jetee Nord) is located at the end of the jetty on the North side of the entrance to the port at La Goulette, Tunisia, which is a main port area for the adjacent city of Tunis. The age of the current light is not known, but a station was established at this location in 1850. The light is metal and sits atop metal legs. Photos taken in September 2011.

Far de Montjuic, Barcelona, Spain


The Montjuic Lighthouse (Far de Montjuic) is located part way up the Montjuic mountain which overlooks the harbour at Barcelona, Spain. This lighthouse, which is active, was built in 1925. Photos taken in September 2011. Bottom photo taken in October 2016.

Torre del Reloj, Barcelona, Spain


The Torre del Reloj lighthouse was constructed in the 1772 and is located on the Moll des Pescadors in the waterfront area of Barcelona, Spain.  It is now a clock tower, however the top of the tower where the clock is located was formerly a light and gallery.  The light has been inactive since the 1860's.
