Sandy Point Lighthouse, Shelburne, Nova Scotia

In going through some old (pre-digital photography) albums, I came across this photo I took of the Sandy Point Lighthouse near Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  It is located on the east side of the entrance to Shelburne Harbour on a concrete pier. It commenced operation in 1880 on a wooden pier which was later replaced by the concrete pier.  It was manned until 1980 when it was automated.  It was discontinued by the Coast Guard in 1996 and is now owned by the community of Sandy Point and serves as a tourist destination.  The photo was taken in September 1998.

Georges Island Lighthouse, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Located on Georges Island in the Halifax Harbour, this light was built in 1919. Georges Island is near the Halifax Cruise Ship Terminal and the Halifax Harbour Walk. Photos taken in Sept. 2009.

Walton Harbour Lighthouse, Walton Harbour, Nova Scotia

This lighthouse is located in Walton Harbour, Nova Scotia on the Bay of Fundy. Originally commissioned in 1873, it was decommissioned in the 1970's. The municipality of East Haunt's purchased it and it was declared a heritage site in 1992. Photo was taken in 1998.

Fort Point Lighthouse, Liverpool, Nova Scotia

Located in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, this lighthouse was decommissioned in 1989. Originally established in 1855, the lighthouse was restored and the land around it developed as the Fort Point Lighthouse Museum Interpretive Park which opened in 1997. Photograph of this uniquely shaped lighthouse was taken in 1998.

Seal Island Light Museum, Seal Island, Nova Scotia

This lighthouse and museum is a replica of the Seal Island Lighthouse, Seal Island, Nova Scotia. It is located near Barrington, Nova Scotia and was built in 1978. The original lantern from the Seal Island Light was installed in the replica in 1978. Photo taken in 1998.

Gilberts Cove Lighthouse, Nova Scotia

This light is also know as Gilberts Point Lighthouse. It is located Southwest of Digby, Nova Scotia, overlooking Gilberts Cove and the Digby Spit. The lighthouse was established in 1904. The light was discontinued in 1984. The grounds and light were declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 1990 after being restored by the Gilberts Cove and District Historical Society. Photo taken in 1998.

Peggy's Point Lighthouse, Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia

More commonly know as the Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, this light is located at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia near the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay. It is an extremely popular tourist attraction and has a post office in the tower. The tower is 50 feet tall and the current lighthouse was built in 1915 replacing a wooden structure that had been established in 1868. When I photographed the lighthouse in 1998, recovery operations for the Swissair 111 crash that killed 229 people were still underway, based in Peggy's Cove. The crash had occurred 5 miles offshore from Peggy's Point.

Cape Forchu Lighthouse, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

This lighthouse is located at Yarmouth in Southwestern Nova Scotia. It sits at the entrance to Yarmouth Harbour and and overlooks the Gulf of Maine. The current light was built in 1961 and replaced a former wooden structure that had stood since 1839. Photo taken in 1998.
