Cape Spear Lighthouses, Cape Spear, Newfoundland
There are two lighthouses at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Cape Spear, near the Newfoundland capital of St. John's, is the most Easterly point in Canada. The old lighthouse (left) became operational in 1836 and continued in operation until 1955 when the new lighthouse (right) was put into commission. My photos were taken in 1998.

Montauk Point Lighthouse, Long Island, New York
The Montauk Point Lighthouse is located at the Easternmost point of Long Island, New York in Montauk Point State Park. The light was the first lighthouse in New York State and is the fourth oldest active light in the U.S.A. It was constructed in 1796 and first lit in 1797. It has been automated since 1987. The light is owned and maintained by the Montauk Historical Society. My photo was taken in 2004.
Walton Harbour Lighthouse, Walton Harbour, Nova Scotia
Fort Point Lighthouse, Liverpool, Nova Scotia
Located in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, this lighthouse was decommissioned in 1989. Originally established in 1855, the lighthouse was restored and the land around it developed as the Fort Point Lighthouse Museum Interpretive Park which opened in 1997. Photograph of this uniquely shaped lighthouse was taken in 1998.

Gilberts Cove Lighthouse, Nova Scotia
This light is also know as Gilberts Point Lighthouse. It is located Southwest of Digby, Nova Scotia, overlooking Gilberts Cove and the Digby Spit. The lighthouse was established in 1904. The light was discontinued in 1984. The grounds and light were declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 1990 after being restored by the Gilberts Cove and District Historical Society. Peggy's Point Lighthouse, Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
More commonly know as the Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, this light is located at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia near the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay. It is an extremely popular tourist attraction and has a post office in the tower. The tower is 50 feet tall and the current lighthouse was built in 1915 replacing a wooden structure that had been established in 1868. When I photographed the lighthouse in 1998, recovery operations for the Swissair 111 crash that killed 229 people were still underway, based in Peggy's Cove. The crash had occurred 5 miles offshore from Peggy's Point.

Perhaps one of the most recognizable lighthouses in Prince Edward Island, with its distinctive black and white colour scheme, West Point Lighthouse is located on PEI shore on the Western Entrance to Northumberland Straight. It was established in 1875. The light is automated and the building now houses a gift shop, restaurant and accommodation. My photo was taken in 1998.

Pointe Venus Lighthouse, Tahiti
The Pointe Venus Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of Tahiti in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. It was built in 1868 and was restored in 1963. It is reported to have been built by Thomas Stevenson, father of author Robert Louis Stevenson. My photo was taken during a trip to French Polynesia in 1991.
Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt
Known as one of the Wonders of the Ancient World the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt was built in the 3rd Century B.C. on a small island in the harbour at Alexandria. It was estimated to have been between 380 - 490 feet in height, and was considered one of the first lighthouses in the world. The structure was destroyed in the 1300's A.D. The photo is of Fort Qaitbey which sits on what is believed to be the original site of the Pharos Lighthouse, and it is believed that some of the original stonework from the Pharos Lighthouse was used in the construction of the fort. Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, Mendocino, California
Photos were taken in August 2005. The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse is located North of Mendocino, California. It is a beautiful restored lighthouse is owned by California State Parks and was restored by the Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association. The lighthouse was originally constructed in 1908. The lightkeepers's house has also been restored and opened in 2006 as the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo.
Battery Point Light, Crescent City, California
This light is situated on a small island adjacent to the harbour at Crescent City, California. The island can be reached on foot when the tide is low. It was first lit in 1856. It was automated in 1953 and is currently a museum operated by the Del Norte Historical Society. This photo was taken in July 2005.
Umpqua River Light, Reedsport, Oregon
This light is located in the Umpqua River State Park just south of Reedsport, Oregon overlooking the Umpqua River. The current light was lit in 1894 when it replaced the original Umpqua River Light that was abandoned because of unstable ground in 1864. The light was changed to electric from oil in 1934. The light is still operational and automated. Top photo taken on a foggy morning in 2005. Other photos taken in June 2012.
