Molo de San Vicenzo, Naples, Italy
The lighthouse, Molo de San Vicenzo sits on the long breakwater (Mole de San Vicenzo) at the main entrance to the port at Naples, Italy. This beautiful red lighthouse sits near a statue of San Gennaro. The lighthouse was constructed in 1916. Photos taken in September 2011.

It would be interesting to know if this light house replaced the one that stood in the harbor in the fifteenth century? If you look at the painting by Tavola Strozzi: View of Naples c. 1473, the artist has depicted a red light house standing in the middle of the harbor/bay.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the answer to that but will do some reseach. Thanks. Neal
DeleteThe lighthouse in the painting by Strozzi was constructed by architect Luca Bengiamo in the 15th century and was the first lighthouse. It is unclear from my research if it was in the same spot, but from the painting it appears fairly close to where the current one sits (perhaps a bit closer to shore so the breakwater has probably been extended). Cheers, Neal
DeleteI also love them. One of my biggest dreams is to see as many as possible in my life :)
