Sheringham Point Lighthouse, Shirley, B.C.

The Sheringham Point Lighthouse is located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Northwest of Victoria, at Shirley, B.C. It is the most Southerly of the lighthouses that are found on what is known as the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The light was established in 1912 and the original lens was replaced by a revolving beacon in the 1970's. The government and the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society are attempting to work out arrangements for the society to preserve the site. Triangle Island Lighthouse Exhibit, Sooke, B.C.

Triangle Island is located Northwest of Cape Scott at the Northern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The island is part of the Scott Island Provincial Park, an ecological reserve. In 1910 a lighthouse was established on the island, however it was soon discovered that the light was of not much use. The Triangle Island Lighthouse was decomissioned in 1918 and dismantled in 1920. The lens and dome of this lighthouse has been preserved at the Sooke Regional Museum in Sooke, B.C. (Just Northwest of Victoria). Photos of the exhibit were taken in July 2009.

Cape Mudge Lighthouse, Quadra Island, B.C.

The Cape Mudge Lighthouse is located at the south end of Quadra Island, British Columbia, overlooking the entrance to Discovery Passage. It was established here in 1898 and the station is still staffed by the Canadian Coast Guard. It is directly across the channel from Campbell River on Vancouver Island and cruise ships bound for Alaska pass frequently during the summer months. Photos taken in July 2009.

Pulteney Point Lighthouse, Malcolm Island, B.C.

The Pulteney Point Lighthouse is located on the Southwest tip of Malcolm Island, British Columbia adjacent to Broughton Strait. The lighthouse station was established in 1905 and is one of the remaining manned lightstations in British Columbia. I was not able to determine the date of the current structure. The day I visited, the morning marine layer moved in and out, enhancing my first view as I hiked down the beach. Photos taken in July 2009.

Lime Kiln Lighthouse, San Juan Island, Washington

The Lime Kiln Lighhouse was established in 1914. It sits on the East side of San Juan Island in what is currently Lime Kiln State Park. The light was one of the last major lights in the USA to be automated (1962). The building today houses a research station for monitoring whale movement in the area. The area is a good place for whale watching as there are three resident Orca pods (J, K, and L pods) that frequent the San Juan Islands.

Cattle Point Lighthouse, San Juan Island, Washington

This lighthouse is located at the South tip of San Juan Island. The site was established in 1888, with a lens lantern. In the 1920's a radio compass station was established just East of the site of the light. The powerhouse for the radio compass station still stands. The current lighthouse was built in 1935. It sits in the Cattle Point Interperative Area and there are a number of walking trails to enjoy while visiting the light.

Remmarholmen, Helsinki, Finland

This light is found on the approach to Helsinki, the photo was taken June 2009. It has been identified as Remmarholmen light (described in a Helsinki Port Departure Document as as one of the Vallisaari leading lights). Georgina Point Lighthouse, Mayne Island, British Columbia

The Georgina Point Lighthouse (also known as the Active Pass Lighthouse) sits at the Northern tip of Mayne Island on Georgia Strait at the entrance to Active Pass, a channel between Mayne and Galiano Island (a main ferry route from the Vancouver Area to the Victoria Area). The original light station was established in 1885, however the current light was built in 1940. The lighthouse was decomissioned in 1969. It is currently on part of the Parks Canada Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.

Beachy Head Lighthouse, Eastbourne, East Sussex, England

I haven't posted any lighthouses that I have not personally visited, but I am making an exception this time. My friends Phil and Margy sent me photos of the Beachy Head Lighthouse and because of the spectacular location, I decided to share. This lighthouse was built in 1902 and sits at the bottom of the cliff at Beachy Head. It was automated in 1983. Photos taken in June 2009.

Gibralter Point Lighthouse, Toronto Island, Toronto, Ontario

Also called "The Lake Light" this beautiful lighthouse sits on Toronto Island on Lake Ontario at Toronto, Ontario. Built in 1808 it was one of the earliest lights on the Great Lakes, is the oldest surviving light on the Great Lakes and the second oldest surviving lighthouse in Canada. It was Decommissioned in 1957. It once was only a few metres away from the shore, but shifting currents moved it further inland over the years. It is now maintained by the Metro Toronto Parks Department. The plaque on the building speaks of its reputation as being haunted because of the mysterious disappearance of the first lightkeeper. Port Dover Lighthouse, Port Dover, Ontario

Bulit in 1846 this light sits at the end of the West pier at Port Dover, Ontario at the mouth of the Lynn River on Lake Erie. It is automated and was damaged by a lightening strike in 1981 but has been repaired. Photo taken in June 2009.

Port Maitland Lighthouse, Port Maitland, Ontario

This light is located on the West Pier at Port Maitland, Ontario at the mouth of the Grand River on Lake Erie. It was built in 1830. Photos taken in June 2009.

Point Abino Lighthouse, Fort Erie, Ontario

This beautiful structure is located at Point Abino on the shore of Lake Erie and is just West of Crystal Beach (in the municipality of Fort Erie). The light was built in 1917 and automated in 1989 and then decomissioned in 1995. It is a National Historic Site and owned by the Town of Fort Erie. It is surrounded by private property, but tours are available on some Saturdays (contact the Town of Fort Erie). Photos taken in June 2009.

Niagara River Rear Range Light, Niagara On The Lake, Ontario

This light is located North of the Niagara River Front Range Light on the East shore of the Niagara River at Niagara On The Lake, Ontario. It was built in 1903. Since 1975 it has housed a water quality sampling laboratory. Photos taken in June 2009.

Port Dalhousie Front Range Light, Port Dalhousie, Ontario

This light, also called the Port Dalhousie Outer Range Light was built in 1879 and sit at the end of the East pier at the North entrance to the old Welland Canal on Lake Ontario at Port Dalhousie, Ontario. It was automated in 1968 and is still active as an aid to navigation for recreational vessels. Photos taken in June 2009.

This light sits at the North entrance to the old Welland Canal on Lake Ontario at Port Dalhousie, Ontario. It was built in 1898 and replaced a previous (1893) light that was destroyed by a lightening strike. It was automated in 1968 and decomissioned in 1988. It now serves as the home of the Niagara College Sailing School. Photos taken in June 2009.

Burlington Canal Range Light, Burlington Beach, Ontario

This light is located at the end of the pier on the South side of the Burlington Canal at Burlington Beach, Ontario, on the shore of Lake Ontario. It was built in 1909 and is East of the Burlington Main Light. Photo taken in June 2009.

Burlington Main Light, Burlington Beach, Ontario

This light is located at Burlington Beach on the South side of the Burlington Canal which leads to Hamilton Harbour on the shore of Lake Ontario. It was built in 1858 to replace a former wooden structure that was destroyed by fire in 1856. The circular limestone tower now sits behind the new lift bridge and was decomissioned in 1860. The light and the old brick lightkeeper's house are now heritage buildings. Photos taken in June 2009.
